In early illustrations by John Tenniel, the White Rabbit was one of the first characters ever drawn wearing a waistcoat and carrying a pocket watch—clothing that helped Victorian readers instantly see him as an anxious, time-bound civil servant. He’s also the only Wonderland character who exists both in the Queen’s court and outside of it, making him a rare link between the ordinary and the absurd.
