The sound designer used the breathing apparatus from a scuba regulator to give Vader his menacing and instantly recognizable sound. This breathing was designed to emphasize Vader’s dependence on life-supporting technology after his injuries and adds a chilling layer to his presence. The deep, rhythmic breathing became so legendary that it’s recognizable even outside of the movies, instantly evoking Vader’s dark and imposing presence.
