Mirkwood, originally known as Greenwood the Great, is a vast forest in northern Rhovanion, whose transformation reflects the growing darkness in Middle-earth. It lies near key regions like Erebor and the Woodland Realm of the Elves. When Sauron took residence at Dol Guldur in its southern reaches, the forest became dark and perilous, overrun with giant spiders and other twisted creatures. Mirkwood served as a barrier between the free lands of Rhovanion and the darker forces of the south, creating a natural divide that influenced trade, travel, and alliances among Elves, Dwarves, and Men in the region.
